Hildebrand was charged with overseeing the Obama campaign in the first four states - Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada.

"Two of those were primary states, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Two of them were caucus states, Iowa and Nevada. My role was to help staff those states, work with those states on their budgets, on their planning, their strategies, on their schedules for Barack and Michelle and for surrogates."

Reflections on the long Democratic primary

He said he was surprised at how long the campaign was. A typical primary, he noted, will go through three or four states. Momentum usually propels a candidate to success after the early contests.

"I don't think ever in the history of our party has a primary gone to all 50 states and the seven territories. It was, in the end, a very good thing for Barack to have to fight in these contests. It was exhausting."
